What is CSED Week?

Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) is an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science.

It is held in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906). During this week, many computer science related programs take place. Code.org has created the “Hour of Code” where during one hour, students are introduced to programming.

While programming is an important part of computer science, there are other facets of computer science that can also be explored during this week. Because of the awareness and success that Code.org was able to achieve, Computer Science Education Week is now more broadly referred to as the ‘Hour of Code’ event.

Code for fun featuring "The Computers" during CS Education Week

During Computer Science Education week, Code for fun, in partnership with PTSA and Irvington Girls in STEM club, is organizing a free screening of the documentary: The Computers, now premiering at the Seattle International Film Festival.

The documentary shares the inspirational story of the ENIAC Programmers and the significant role of women in computing since the very start.

Following the screening, influential professional women in Computer Science will share their experience via a panel discussion.

This is a great opportunity to encourage all students – girls and boys – to pursue careers in STEM!

This is a free event organized with the collaboration of:

  • Code for fun, a non-profit organization teaching Computer Science to students K-12,
  • Irvington Girls in STEM club
  • PTSA (Parents Teachers Staff Association, Irvington High School
